Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in Ireland?
If your driving licence is in English and uses a Latin alphabet, you do not need an IDP. However, if your licence is in a non-Latin script (e.g., Chinese, Arabic), you must provide an IDP along with your original licence, which you have held for a minimum of two years.
Can I add an additional driver?
Yes, additional drivers can be added to the rental agreement for a fee. The additional driver must meet the same license requirements as the main renter.
Do I need insurance to rent a car?
Basic insurance (Collision Damage Waiver) is included in the rental price, with CDW you are responsible for an excess amount. You can reduce this liability to zero by purchasing additional coverage options during the booking process or at the rental desk.
Can I use my own insurance?
When you use a third party Excess Reimbursment Policy, it is your responsibility to leave the excess hold on a credit card in the main drivers name. In the event of theft or an accident. Your credit card will be charged the damage amount, and you will then need to claim this amount back from your reimbursment policy. This policy is between the renter and the third party and Payless is not responsible for assisting in this process.
Can I rent a car with a Debit Card?
All major payment cards are accepted at the time of booking. A payment card in the renter’s name must be presented at pickup. Both Credit and Debit Cards are acceptable.
If using a Debit Card, you must purchase our Excess Reduction product at the counter to reduce your financial responsibility to zero in case of vehicle theft or damage (details are provided in the ‘Collision Damage Waiver and Theft Protection / Responsibility for Vehicle Damage:’ section). PIN-enabled cards will require your PIN for authorization. Specified value/pre-paid Payment Cards will not be accepted.
Can I drive the rental car into Northern Ireland?
Yes, if you wish to drive the car into Northern Ireland your rental will be subject to a cross border coverage fee of EUR €34. This fee covers cross border vehicle retrieval in case of breakdown. Payless cars may not be taken outside the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Are there any toll roads in Ireland?
Yes, Ireland has several toll roads. Most require payment at a toll booth, except for the M50 around Dublin, which uses an electronic barrier-free system. All Payless cars and vans are registered with eFlow for automatic payment processing. Toll charges will be automatically billed to the customer’s payment card three days after the rental period ends. More information on paying tolls can be found here.
What happens if I get a parking ticket or traffic fine?
The renter is responsible for paying all parking and traffic violations incurred while using the vehicle. If you incur a violation during the rental our agent will process and bill you for fines associated with the violations. In addition to any violation fees you will also be charged a service charge, payable to the third party, of €30.00 per violation. These items will be billed directly to the Credit you used for the rental transaction.
What should I do if my flight is delayed?
